Deepak Bhoria Takes Down Bibossinov, Hussamuddin in the Quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships
Deepak made his place into the pre-quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships after bowing out Saken Bibossinov of Kazakhstan (bronze medalist in the Tokyo Olympics) in Tashkent. He will now prepare for the flyweight (51kg) category The third round proved that Bhoria was a man of mettle, and one of the best Indian boxers as his performance spoke for itself. In recent times, we can say the intense effort from Bhoria is a fine example of top listed games in the boxing arena for the nation. While the first two rounds saw Deepak lagging, he was able to overtake in the third round and take the bout.
He dealt with Bibossinov with a good ring craft and stepped up the match with quick move-aways and punches in counter-attacks from the Kazakh. Deepak rattled Bibossinov with crushing left hooks and clean straight punches and putting up impressive weaving, bobbing, and defense. With successful dodges, he also escaped crosses from his opponent and went on with a win. Earlier last year in world championships, however, Bhoria had lost to Bibossinov 5-0. But the current game was a strong comeback for Deepak.
Bhoria said that his strategy was to be quick and careful as his opponent closed upon him. He went in and out quickly to keep the score. Lastly, Bhoria said he focused on scoring the maximum and fought with patience. He also stated that the first two rounds were difficult and he was prepared to attack as much as possible and not to get punched on. He knew that winning the third round was necessary, and was glad that the outcome was in his favor.
Deepak won 5-2 after there was a review of the bout. He kept the faith of the coaches after being selected over Amit Panghal (Tokyo Olympian and gold medalist at Commonwealth Games). Next, he will encounter Zhang Jiamao of China. Md. Hussamuddin (57kg) on the other hand entered the quarter-finals and kept on his winning streak with a 5-0 win against Savvin Eduard of Russia.
