Gautam Gambhir on Rohit Sharma’s place in the Sydney test for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Summary: Gambhir said: "We shall look at the pitch and take a call tomorrow," when asked, Will Rohit play in the Sydney test?
Rohit Sharma has so far given only subpar performances in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, and so he is once again under scrutiny. In 15 Test innings in 2024, Rohit scored 10 single-digit scores.
For five innings, he has only managed 31 runs, scoring 3, 6, 10, 3, and 9 at a poor average of 6.20, which is the lowest by any visiting skipper on Australian territory.
Fans and experts have called for the out-of-form India skipper to be dropped. However, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, did not rule out Rohit missing the series decider.
Rohit Sharma's participation in Friday's Test match between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground has not been confirmed by India's head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir was questioned about Sharma's involvement in the game during a press conference on Thursday.
He said, "Everything is fine with Rohit and we will announce that [Playing XI] tomorrow, after seeing the pitch.”
He was specifically asked about Rohit’s involvement in the team, to which he answered, “As I just said, we're going to have a look at the wicket and probably announce the playing XI tomorrow. So the answer remains the same.”
India is behind 2-1 after a defeat in Melbourne earlier this week, and captain Rohit has struggled for runs in the opening four tests of the five-match series.
However, Gambhir denied media claims that he handed out the riot act to his team following the Melbourne defeat and revealed that fast bowler Akash Deep was out of the game due to a back injury.
