New GST Cuts Bring Big Savings for Households — What’s Cheaper Now

Summary: GST rate cuts on essentials and durables start Sept 22, easing costs on food, cars, and insurance.

The GST adjustment in India takes effect on September 22, 2025, and will benefit many people daily. Goods and services tax slabs have been reduced so that more home-use items, food, and personal care goods now attract much lower or zero tax.

For example, a box of Kellogg’s Original Corn Flakes (900g) will drop in price from ₹399 to around ₹355. Marie Light biscuits, large ice cream cones, even shampoo, toothpaste, and hair oil—these all become about 11-13% cheaper. Mother Dairy has cut its 50 ml vanilla ice cream cup by about 10%.

Households buying durable goods also stand to benefit. ACs, large TVs, refrigerators—many of these will see price drops. Cement has moved from a 28% GST slab down to 18%. Car makers like Maruti Suzuki are slashing prices, especially on smaller cars and mini SUVs.

Insurance premiums for life and health policies are also getting easier on the wallet—GST on them has been removed, meaning noticeable savings for policyholders.

Economists say this could give consumer spending a boost, especially among middle-income families. With inflation still biting, these tax cuts might offer some much-needed breathing space for family budgets.
