Make-in-India electronics boom creates over 1.33 million jobs, smartphone exports surge

Summary: The PLI scheme supports massive job growth and a tenfold increase in exports of Indian Smartphones.

India's "Make in India" project aims to build a strong electronics manufacturing sector and is producing promising results. Over the last five years, it has created over 1.33 million jobs, largely due to the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has increased smartphone and electronics production.

Based on data, the numbers do not justify the growth; they represent significant chances for employees, particularly women and first-time job seekers. Nearly 70% of new jobs in the industry were filled by women or newcomers to the workforce, showing how manufacturing is diversifying.

The mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem has played a central role in this transformation. Mobile production has climbed sharply, and exports have risen nearly tenfold since the PLI scheme was introduced, making India a key player on the global smartphone stage.

In fact, smartphone manufacturing now contributes significantly to India's export development, reducing the country's dependency on imports and strengthening its position in global supply chains.

The PLI scheme's success has encouraged large multinational companies and contract manufacturers to expand their operations in India. Apple and its main partners, such as Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics, have increased local production, resulting in a higher percentage of devices being made and exported by Indian manufacturers.

The sector generates about ₹25,000 crore per year, sustaining millions of homes, resulting in higher wages. The occupations include both production and support responsibilities, such as logistics, quality control, and supply chain management.

Experts believe the rapid growth illustrates how specific incentives, like the PLI plan, can change a business. With additional capital and government support, India is set to become one of the biggest global manufacturing centres, primarily for smartphones with significant components.

In short, what started as a government push to make India a manufacturing destination has turned into a broader economic story — one that’s creating jobs, boosting exports and helping the country climb the global value chain.
