Kerala Sees COVID-19 Spike with Two Deaths and Rising Cases
Summary: Kerala reports two COVID-19 deaths and a sharp rise in active cases, prompting health officials to reinforce safety measures.
Kerala is seeing another spike in COVID-19 cases, with current infections tripling to 182 in only two days. Two recent deaths have been reported, both of which were older men with pre-existing health concerns, one from Kollam and the other from Thiruvananthapuram.
Most of the active cases are concentrated in Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thiruvananthapuram districts. According to health authorities, the sudden rise is likely due to highly contagious Omicron sub-variants like JN.1, LF.7, and NB.1.8. Although these variants are known to spread fast, symptoms are mild for most people.
Health Minister Veena George has urged the public to remain vigilant and take safeguards. Masks are now required in hospitals, and persons with symptoms, as well as vulnerable populations such as the elderly and pregnant women, are encouraged to wear them in public areas.
Hospitals have been directed to stock up on testing kits and ensure medical staff wear protective gear. While there is no immediate panic, the government is urging everyone to act responsibly to prevent another wave of infections.
