Kamal Haasan Set to Join Rajya Sabha with DMK’s Backing
Summary: Kamal Haasan, a legendary actor and the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, is ready to take up a new position as Rajya Sabha member.
Kamal Haasan, the legendary actor and founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), is set to take on a new role as a Rajya Sabha member. The ruling DMK of Tamil Nadu has chosen to back Haasan by allocating one of its Rajya Sabha seats to his party in the next elections.
This move follows an earlier alliance formed between the DMK and MNM during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While Haasan's party hasn't seen major wins in past elections, this opportunity gives him a chance to actively contribute to national politics.
The MNM formally confirmed Haasan’s nomination, and he is expected to be elected unopposed when the elections take place on June 19. DMK has also nominated three others: senior advocate P Wilson, writer Salma, and former minister SR Sivalingam for the remaining seats.
With four seats likely given to the DMK and its allies and two to the AIADMK, Haasan's admission is very probable.
However, the report comes at a time when Haasan is already under fire for prior statements claiming that Kannada came from Tamil. The statements provoked outrage, particularly among Karnataka legislators seeking a formal apology.
Despite the excitement, Kamal Haasan's election to Parliament is seen as a significant political milestone, adding another layer to his already multifaceted career.
