Canada Turns Down 74% of Indian Student Visas in August — A Record High
Summary: Canada declined 3 out of 4 visas of Indian students in August 2025, as the country tightened checks following rising cases of fake documents.
Canada seems to be harsher on student visas, which is affecting Indian students badly. Recent data show that almost 74% of Indian applicants had their study permits rejected in August 2025, the highest denial rate we've seen in years.
Just two years back, the situation was totally different. Back in August 2023, the refusal rate was around 32%. Out of more than 20,000 applications, a large number got through. But this year, out of just 4,515 applications, only 1,196 were approved — a major dip that’s hard to ignore.
The reasons aren’t entirely surprising. Canadian immigration officials have been cracking down since a big fraud scandal broke in 2023, when over 1,500 bogus study visa applications were traced to forged college admission letters. Most of those were linked to agents operating out of India.
Tensions between India and Canada haven’t helped either. Diplomatic friction over political issues has further strained trust, and that’s quietly spilling over into immigration decisions. Canadian universities, especially popular ones like the University of Waterloo, are already feeling the pinch. Reports say their Indian student numbers have dropped by almost two-thirds in the last few years.
For students hoping to study in Canada, this is a wake-up call. Visa approval is no longer a given — every document, every step will be under a microscope. If this trend continues, many might start looking elsewhere for opportunities.
