Laapataa Ladies is out of the Oscars 2025 race.
Summary: Kiran Rao-directed film Laapataa Ladies is not part of the shortlist of 15 features for the Best International Feature category.
India's official submission for the 97th Academy Awards' Best International Feature category, Laapataa Ladies, is not in the running for the Oscars.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) said Wednesday morning that the Kiran Rao-directed Hindi movie didn't appear in the 15 movies that will compete for a place in the final five.
Following their loss in the Oscar competition, Aamir Khan's production company released a statement. It said: "Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) did not make it to the Academy Awards shortlist this year, and we are of course disappointed, but equally we are immensely grateful for the incredible support and belief we've received throughout this journey.”
“We at Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios, and Kindling Productions extend our gratitude to the Academy members and the FFI jury for considering our film. To be included in this prestigious process alongside some of the finest films from across the world is an honor in itself. Our heartfelt thanks to all the audiences around the world who have expressed their love and support for our film. We congratulate the teams of all the top 15 shortlisted films and wish them the very best in the next stages of the awards. For us, this is not the end but a step forward. We remain committed to bringing more powerful stories to life and sharing them with the world. Thank you for being part of this journey."
"Anuja" by Monga is on the shortlist for Best Live-Action Short Film. Actor Nagesh Bhonsle plays a significant part in the film, which highlights the significant problem of child labor in the apparel industry.
This is her third Oscar nomination. Earlier, her movies, Period: End of Sentence and The Elephant Whisperers brought honor to Indian cinema by winning Oscars.
'Santosh', a British-Indian film directed by Sandhya Suri, is another Oscar candidate besides Anuja. Santosh, which stars actor Shahana Goswami, is the UK's official Oscar submission. The movie made its Cannes Film Festival debut earlier this year in the Un Certain Regard division.
