Carrageenan is a family of linear, sulphated polysaccharides derived from seaweeds and finds tremendous application in Pharmaceuticals, personal care and food industries. The Global Carrageenan market has been accounted for US$XX Million and is expected to grow to US$XX Million by 2022, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. Carrageenan is an important ingredient in the products of the food industry. It is a suitable alternative for gelatin and is gaining popularity because of a growing trend of plant-based ingredients in the market. Carrageenans are mainly used as emulsifying, thickening, suspending, gelling and stabilizing agents. Ongoing research on the application of carrageenans has opened new realms of applications in nutrition, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries.

Market Dynamics:

The rapid growth of food processing has been a major cause for the anticipated growth. Increasing health awareness and growing concerns about the origin of ingredients has uplifted the share of organic ingredients in the food industry. Consistent performance and a multitude of applications have further made Carrageenan popular over its competitors like gelatin. Carrageenans are a rich source of sodium, potassium and calcium and hence, can also be used for making food supplements. It is also extensively used in the dairy industry to maintain the consistency and stability of shakes, smoothies and in ice-creams as a thickening agent. Rapid urbanization and increased disposable income have increased the demand for bakery items, such as cakes, pastries, etc. and has, in turn, led to the growth of the global Carrageenan market. Carrageenan is also used in a variety of cosmetic products like body lotions, shampoo, soap, toothpaste and gel fresheners as a base. Fluctuating prices and increased risk of gastrointestinal ailments due to Carrageenan-based products has hindered the growth of the market.

Market Segmentation:

On the basis of type of Carrageenan, the market is divided into Kappa, Iota and Lambda Carrageenan. All the three are different structurally and functionally. Kappa is the leading segment and used to form stronger gels, and as a binding agent in chocolates, ice creams and puddings. Lambda is used to produce whipped cream. On the basis of source, the market can be divided into Iridaea, Gigartina, Chondrus and Eucheuma. On the basis of application, the major segments are food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The food and beverages industry is the largest consumer.

Geographical Analysis:

The Asia-Pacific region has the largest market share and is significantly larger than the European and North American markets. The Philippines produces almost 70% of the global Carrageenan. However, China is the major exporter of Carrageenan to Europe and U.S. In U.S., Carrageenan is mainly being used in the production of chocolate milk, to maintain the suspension.

Key Players

Some of the key players in the industry include ACCEL Carrageenan Corporation (ACC) (Philippines), Gather Great Ocean (China), TIC Gums (U.S.), Karagen Indonesia (Indonesia) and Xieli (China).
