Brazing is a process in which more than two metals items are can be joined together by the usage of a molten and a flowing filler metal into the metal joint. Brazing makes use of a number of alloys as filler metals depending on the intended usage or application method. In general, brazing alloys are made up of 3 or more metals to manufacture an alloy with the desired properties. The alloy used as the filler metal is chosen based on the ability to withstand the service conditions required and melt at a temperature lower than the base metals or their ability to wet the base metals that are supposed to be joined.

The braze alloys can be utilized in a number of forms such as paste, powder, tapes, foils and braze wires, and rods and depending on the application, the alloy can be pre-placed at a desired location or can be applied during the heating cycle.For manual brazing, wire and rod forms are generally used as they are the easiest to apply while heating. In the case of furnace brazing, alloy is usually placed beforehand since the process is usually highly automated. Some common types of brazing alloy metals used are aluminium-silicon, copper and copper -silver, copper -zinc etc. Active brazing materials find a widespread usage in joining ceramics which cannot be otherwise joined using conventional alloys due to their poor wetting qualities. These active brazing materials on the other hand are formed by the addition of brazing alloy like titanium to conventional metal alloys thereby leading to an enhancement of the wetting behaviour and aiding the joining of ceramics.
