Xcel Energy (XEL) is undertaking the Black Dog Power Plant Conversion project at Burnsville in the US.

The project involves the construction of a 215MW gas-fired power unit while replacing existing coal-fired power units. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, storage tanks, pipeline facilities, a sub-station, the installation of turbines, inlet air filter, evaporative cooler, combustor, compressor, generators, main step-up transformer and an auxiliary transformer, a gasification unit, substation to control the voltage fluctuation, and the laying of transmission lines to connect the power to the regional/national grid.

General Electric Company has been appointed as supply contractor, Fossil Power Technologies Group of Sargent & Lundy as the construction contractor and AZCO as the turbine installation contractor.

In April 2013, XEL submitted the project plans to the DOE.

On October 15, 2015, XEL applied at the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) for a site permit.

In June 2016, construction works commenced with foundation work for the new unit.

On September 26, 2016, the project received site permits from PUC.

XEL received approvals from Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.

Construction works are underway.
