The project involves the upgrade of 218km road of the Great Northern Highway between Muchea to Wubin.
The project includes the straightening and widening of the 11km Bindi Curves section, reconstruction of the 16 km section of GNH between Batty Bog Road and Wellbeing and the construction of additional overtaking lanes, access and bypass roads and related infrastructure.
MRWA appointed Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. and Arup Group Ltd to conduct a comprehensive planning review of the project.
The project secured US$332 million funds for the project development i.e. US$248 million from federal government, US$62 million from state government and US$22 million from both federal and state government.
On September 1, 2016, MRWA Invited tender for 16 km section of GNH between Batty Bog Road to Wellbeing with last submission date as September 20, 2016.
In the second quarter of 2016, construction works commenced.
On January 1, 2017, MRWA invited tender to appoint a construction contractor for the miling bypass road of the project.
In April 2017, miling bypass road has received the environmental approvals. Construction is expected to start in the first quarter 2018 and scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2019.
In May 2017, the project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments of $55 million in 201718.
In September 2017, MRWA secured US$83 million funds from the Australian Government for the project.
Construction activities are underway.
